Winterize Your Skin: Top Tips for Soft, Supple Skin all Season

With temperatures dropping and furnaces and heat pumps ramping up, the season for typically dry winter skin is upon us. However, at Hello Joyous we know there is a lot you can do to prevent the dryness and itchiness that often accompanies this seasonal change. Spring is only 6 months away, which means the time to start soothing your skin for spring is now! Today we are going to share our top tips to help winterize your skin so you can glow from head-to-toe no matter the season!

Exfoliate once or twice per week

One of the main culprits of skin that looks dry and flaky is when dead skin cells start to build up on the outer layer of the skin. Exfoliating once or twice per week can help to not only remove the dead skin cells that are dulling your glow, it can also help detoxify your skin and increase the absorption of your serum by removing debris.

We’ve written an entire post about why we are such fans of regular exfoliation, but in the winter it can become even more necessary as your skin becomes drier and flakier due to temperature fluctuations and lower humidity. For exfoliating your face, we suggest our Super Natural Mask. This gentle mask exfoliates by lifting away dead skin cells, unclogging pores, and preventing breakouts, all while enhancing your natural glow. But it’s also infused with organic comfrey root and calendula, so it soothes and nourishes your skin, leaving it soft, smooth, and revitalized.

        Hydrate your skin with serum!

Exfoliation is step one of winterizing your skin, but whenever we wash or exfoliate our skin we need to make sure we are replenishing it with hydration, moisture, and nutrients. That’s where a potent serum comes into play! We designed our simple, yet highly effective, Hella Hydrating Serum that contains two super hero ingredients, organic cold-pressed rosehip oil and hyaluronic acid, to infuse your skin with everything it needs to stay soft and supple all season long.

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, which means it attracts and helps the skin hang onto water for a plump, dewy complexion. Humectant ingredients are especially important as the dry winter air can sap water from our skin leaving it thirsty and dehydrated. Organic cold-pressed rosehip oil is loaded with vitamins (like A and C!) and fatty acids that not only deeply moisturize the skin, but infuse it with antioxidants that reduce inflammation. When used together they support a healthy glowing complexion.

Pro tip: If you find your skin needs a little more support during winter, try using 3-4 pumps of serum instead of 1-2 or even applying a pump midday to give your skin a drink!

Don’t forget to moisturize your body!

It can be tempting in winter to skip moisturizing anything below the neck since we’re so often bundled up in our cozy matching sets. However, even though it’s often covered up, our skin needs moisturizing even more in the winter months to keep dry, flaky patches and itchiness at bay. That’s why we never skip a day of our Ultra-Moisturizing Body Butter

The light cocoa scent is like a sweet treat for your body in the darkness of winter and the combination of organic shea, mango seed, and cocoa butters and soothing organic oils work together to banish winter dryness and deeply nourish your skin without any greasy residue. We also added Canadian-sourced chaga, propolis, and emblica fruit extract to soothe, heal, and revitalize your skin.

We like to keep one of the 50g jars in our bags so we can apply it to our hands when we’re out and about since our hands can often be the first part of our body prone to winter dryness and cracking. If you’re as obsessed with our BB as we are, we’ve written a great guide outlining its amazing beauty benefits here.

Sip on a soothing cuppa for gentle detox

Many people tend to wait until spring comes to start taking steps to support their detoxification pathways. We believe that supporting detox and digestion is the foundation for healthy skin, so we suggest sipping on a cuppa Everyday Detox Tea all winter long. Just like we don’t believe in gimmicks or fairy dusting in skincare, we think the best method to detoxify the body is to supply it with the nutrients and vitamins that it needs to do its job, no gimmicky cleanses or harsh laxative teas required!

Our skin is often a direct reflection of our detoxification or digestive function, which is why it is so important to support it all year long. If we’re feeling internally congested that can be externally reflected in dryness, breakouts, or itchiness.

Our Everyday Detox Tea is gentle enough to drink daily, supports digestion, and tastes fresh and delicious. Most detox teas have a medicinal or bitter flavour that makes them unpleasant or difficult to drink. That’s not a problem with our tea. You’ll love the fresh flavour from the ginger and lemon so much, you won’t believe it’s a detox tea!

                  Bonus: Spritz your skin!

One final way to help hydrate your skin, especially if you work or live in a dry environment, is to spritz yourself with our Magical Mist Toner throughout the day. The blend of organic plant hydrosols from herbs such as lemon balm and rose geranium is like giving your skin a drink from the most nourishing water fountain you can imagine.

Applying it before your serum helps the ingredients penetrate into your skin for increased effectiveness. It also helps balance your skin’s natural pH, which, when disrupted, can lead to dry, flaky skin. We believe everyone should embrace the benefits of botanical beauty by including a toner in their routine, especially for nourishing thirsty winter skin.

Supporting your skin inside and out all throughout the changing of the seasons will help you winterize your skin so that you can enjoy soft, supple skin all season long!
